Strong demand in 2008
“Demand for Norwegian Salmon is high in spite of the financial turmoil in 2008 and prospects of reduced spending power in many of Norway’s most important seafood markets. The total production of Atlantic Salmon from Norway has never been higher and at the same time the average price for fresh salmon has been good throughout 2008,” says market analyst Paul Aandahl in NSEC. The mean export price for fresh whole salmon was NOK 26.95 per kilo. This is close to NOK 0.5 higher than the mean prize in 2007. At the same time, the exported volume increased by 22,000 tonnes from 2007.

Norway’s most internationalized industry
Norwegian Salmon is exported to 98 countries. The largest market for Norwegian Salmon is France with the total spending on salmon and trout reaching NOK 3.2 billion. Our smallest market for salmon and trout is Ghana, where the export was limited to NOK 30,000.
Poland takes over Denmark’s position as the largest refiner of Norwegian Salmon. Exports to the European Union increased by 273 million and reached 3.2 billion. France is number one in the ranking of important markets. Second place is held by Poland while Denmark finishes third. 2008 was the first year that Poland was ahead of Denmark. Most of the salmon sold to these two countries is processed there and then distributed to other EU-countries.
Strong growth for trout
The value of Norwegian Trout exports increased by 48 percent or NOK 602 million. Most of the growth is due to increased export growth to Russia, which also is our most important market for trout. The export figures to Japan, the second most important export country for Norwegian Trout, are also showing growth.
