Norwegian expedition follows in the footsteps of Amundsen

Last updated: 28/11/2011 // As part of the Nansen-Amundsen year and centennial commemoration of Amundsen’s conquest of the South Pole, a four man strong Norwegian expedition landed on Union Glacier in Antarctica 29 October after a week’s delay due to bad weather.

The aim of the expedition is to follow the route Amundsen used to reach the Pole on 14 December 1911 and arrive at the Pole exactly 100 years after Amundsen. There they will be received by the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.  The expedition will shed light on important aspects of the Norwegian polar history and polar activity in addition to focus on environmental challenges and climate change.

The expedition consists of Jan-Gunnar Winther, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, Harald Dag Jølle, historian, Vegard Ulvang, 5 times World /Olympic cross country skiing champion and Stein P. Aasheim, adventurer.

Vegard Ulvang was recently quoted in an interview with the Norwegian broadcasting corporation NRK saying: “We have to be prepared to tackle a whole range of challenges. For example, we risk experiencing temperatures down to minus 50 degrees Celsius”.
