Sami National Day
100 years ago to this day, the Nordic indigenous population named Sami gathered for the first time in Trondheim to discuss issues of shared interest. His Majesty King Harald, Prime Minister Solberg, Sami leaders from across the Nordic countries and many others have gathered today to remember the Sami history and to celebrate the diversity of Sami culture.
Norway advocates the empowerment and protection of indigenous populations. Our support is mainly channeled though established NGOs who promote indigenous- and human rights, protection of land ownership and natural environment - but we also support indigenous organizations to become influential political actors themselves.
By remembering this important year in Sami history, we ought to look forward to what can be done for indigenous groups in the future.
