The Norwegian Church Abroad
Founded in 1864, Sjømannskirken - the Norwegian Church Abroad - was established to secure the moral and religious education of Scandinavian seafarers, but also to give them a space where a fellow countryman was available to lend an ear and give some attention. Today, the churches and their staff represent a home away from home for all Norwegians travelling internationally.
Sjømannskirken annually serves around 650.000 Norwegians through 32 churches and 16 mobile services in 30 countries around the world.
The Norwegian Chruch Abroad in Sydney reopened in April 2004 after being closed for 25 years. The new church building - "Whitehall"- is situated in Balgowlah near the beautiful Manly Beach.
