Getting married outside of Norway:
If you are Norwegian and wish to marry outside of Norway, the authorities of the country where you are getting married may require a certificate from Norwegian authorities that states that you are not already married in Norway (certificate of no impediment to marriage). In Norway these certificates are issued by the Population Register (Folkeregisteret). To have a certificate issued, you need to fill out certain forms and send them to the Register Office in the district where you were last registrered as living. Forms can be found on the link on the right (Ministry of Children and Family Affairs)

Getting married in Norway:

a. If you are Norwegian but live permanently abroad.
If at least one of you is a Norwegian, but you have moved permanently to another country, you must obtain a certificate of no impediment to marry from the country where you reside before you can get married in Norway. Please contact the authorities in your country of residence to have this document issued. In Australia, these certificates are issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (www.dfat.gov.au).

b. If neither of you are Norwegian
It is possible to get married in Norway even if neither of you are Norwegian, for instance while on holiday in Norway. However, this requires a great deal of planning ahead. Both of you need to have a certificate of no impediment to marriage issued by your homecountry's authorities. In addition you also need this certificate from Norwegian authorities (see above). You need to apply in advance for a wedding date. This can be done by contacting the court or church where you want to get married directly.

c. Getting married in a Norwegian Foreign Mission.
It is possible to marry in certain Norwegian Foreign Missions (embassies or consulates). The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Canberra are not among these missions. For information about which missions you can get married in, and how you go about doing this, please see this website: www.norway.info. It is a requirement that at least one you is a Norwegian citizen.

How to register your marriage in Norway:
If you were married outside of Norway and at least one of you is a Norwegian, you might want to register your marriage with the Norwegian authorities. This can be done by writing to the Population Register (Folkeregisteret) where you are, or were last, registered as living. Send your application for registration directly to this office in the form of letter. You must provide certified copies of your passports and an authenticated original marriage certificate for the marriage to be approved in Norway. A foreign marriage certificate can be authenticated by a Norwegian foreign mission, or by being stamped with an "apostille"  by the authorities of the country where you were married (depending on which country this is). Read more about this on the link on the right.
