As of 3 October 2005 all new Norwegian passports will contain biometric data in machine-readable form. These passports are produced in Norway. The Embassy and Consulates can in some limited circumstances issue handwritten passports. Handwritten passports may only be issued in cases of emergency: this is determined on a case by case basis.

The applications are sent from the Consulate to the Embassy in Canberra where the applications are registered and forwarded electronically to Norway. The production of biometric passports in Norway takes up to two weeks. In addition to this postage time from Norway to Australia should be taken into account. In other words, the expected processing time can be 4-5 weeks. When new passports are received from Norway by the Embassy they are sent by registered post to either the applicant or the Consulate, which ever is relevant.
Existing passports are to be cancelled at the time of application for a new passport, however these will be returned to the holder and any valid visas will be left intact.
Valid visas in expired/cancelled passports
When there is a requirement for a Student or Resident Visa to be transferred to the new passport the holder must apply to the Australian Department of Immigration for a transfer of the visa. In accordance with information received by the Embassy, this process will be free of charge for students. However, the Embassy has also been advised that it is quite in order to carry an expired passport with a valid visa together with a new current passport.
