In cases where there is not enough time to apply for a new biometric passport, or a biometric passport has been applied for but not received in time for travel, an Emergency passport can be issued. These passports are generally only issued with validity time for the specific travel. The maximum validity period allowable is 12 months. An airline ticket showing date of forthcoming travel MUST be produced.
Emergency passports should be applied for IN PERSON from either your nearest Norwegian Consulate or directly from the Embassy in Canberra. In cases where a new passport has already been applied for but not received in time for travel there is no charge for Emergency passports. Otherwise, the passport fee is to be paid to the foreign mission upon submission of the application. If an Emergency passport is required, please make an appointment the Embassy or your most convenient Consulate office. Documentation to be provided is the same as for new machine-readable passports, with the exception of passport photographs and the airline tickets. Only two (2) photos are required for Emergency passports and a paid-for airline ticket must be produced. An airline Itinerary is not sufficient.
Please note that it is not be possible to travel to USA with these hand-written passports unless they contain a USA visa.
