Fiancé permit

If your intention is to get married or enter into partnership during your stay in Norway, it is possible to apply for a work and residence permit. If granted you will be given a six months work and residence permit and during this period marriage or partnership must be contracted. However if marriage does not take place within this six-month period you will have to leave the country.

Who can apply?

You can apply for a fiancé permit if the person you will enter into marriage with is either

  • a Norwegian citizen,
  • a foreign citizen who has a settlement permit/right to live permanently in Norway,
  • or a foreign citizen who has a permit which after three years gives the right to live permanently in Norway

How do I apply?

The application must be submitted to the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission from your country of origin or another country where you have been legally resident for at least six months. The Norwegian foreign service mission will send the application to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for processing. As an applicant, you cannot enter the country before your permit has been granted.

What must the application include?

  • 2 x Completed application form for a First-time Residence or Work Permit - GP7028
  • Passport photo which meets the set requirements, see link.
  • Certified copy of all the pages of your passport (also blank pages).
  • Certified copy of all the pages of passport (also blank pages) for person with whom marriage is intended.
  • Certified copy of your birth certificate.
  • Documentation of the civil status of the couple*
  • Documentation of subsistence (eg. last three months salary slips, work contract, tax certificate) equivalent to civil service pay grade 8, see link.
  • Documentation of housing (rental or sales contract)
  • Information about plans of marriage**
  • In addition a fee must be paid when submitting an application 

*Australian and NZ citizens must provide Certificate of No Impediment from Australian/NZ Foreign Affairs Department as evidence that you are not already married.

**A letter from you and your Norwegian partner documenting your relationship and marriage plans, including details of any arrangements made for the forthcoming marriage.

All photocopied documentation must be certified by a qualified authority as a true copy of the original document. All documents must be translated into English or Norwegian.

How long will it take to process my application?

We urge everyone to allow plenty of time for their application. In order to avoid unnecessary case processing delays, it is important to take care when completing the application form and to include all the requested documentation.

Permit holder's entitlement

The purpose of this permit is that, marriage shall be contracted in Norway. You are entitled to travel in and out of Norway within the validity period of your permit. The permit also entitles you to work. After the marriage, a permit for family immigration can be submitted. This is done at the police in Norway where you live. The application must be submitted before your fiancé permit expires, please see article about Family Immigration. You can continue living in Norway during the processing period. If marriage is not contracted during the time you have a fiancé permit, you must leave Norway.
